So I saw X Files last Sunday and it wasn’t as bad as I expected or as hideous as most CGI-addict/critics said. It was indeed just like one episode in the series and there were better episodes in the earlier seasons.
They could’ve reincarnated Eugene Victor Tooms and it would’ve been so much better. I could rant and curse about the good and the bad things about the movie but that would be too much. The reviews are bad and I believe Chris Carter and Frank Spotnitz can do a better script.
If there’s one thing I really miss in the series that is barely present in the movie, it’s Mulder’s deadpan humor and Scully’s tolerance to Mulder’s alien logic. I am tempted to think that the movie doesn’t need aliens since for the most parts, Scully and Mulder have become one - well, considering both were abductees.
I was delighted to see Skinner - the fairy godfather and the best kick ass boss in the world. CSM and the Lone Gunman were not invited in the gathering - although I think CSM and The Lone Gunman are dead? I think they are. I also miss the flashlights and the badges as Mulder chants “I’m Special Agent Fox Mulder and this is my partner Special Agent Dana Scully. We’re with the FBI…”
The fact that there were no effects at all doesn’t disturb me. I was actually hoping for lesser CGI effects considering I saw The Dark Knight a week before I saw X Files. What I appreciate about IWTB is that it made Scully and Mulder more human.
These two FBI agents are flawed since the series started a decade and a half ago. They are, at times, stupid (especially Mulder). Scully with her short legs doesn’t kick her enemies’ ass at least the way Alias does. Mulder is a nerd prototype who is arsonphobic and acarophobic (not to mention his paranoia). They don’t have James Bond’s gadgets (Scully uses Google for her researches - for crying out loud!).
There were some scenes that drove me nucking futs especially the George Bush joke - I knew there was something spooky about him! There were scenes that could make you scream unwholesome words. There were parts when you wish you could throw alien guts at Agent Drummy’s (Xhibit) dumb face.
So did I like it? Let’s just say I watched it in theater hoping my tinny contribution would help the producers push for a 2012 movie.
It is a good closure for Scully and Mulder (although they haven’t found William yet). But it definitely isn’t a good closure for THE series that opened the door for so many great series today.

Most people don’t know this but the human brain has shrunk dramatically through the millennia of the history of mankind.
Scientists are in some disagreement as to whether this shrinkage started thirty thousand years ago, or ten thousand years ago, but they agree that the brain has shrunk by 8-10%. The brain has in fact been shrinking for the past 100,000 years albeit at a slower rate.
Another conundrum for evolutionary biologists is why the human brain ‘evolved’ to be so big in the first place! It gobbles up an extraordinary amount of energy. It only takes up 2% of our body weight, but uses 20-25% of our energy intake - far more than any other organ. The more the brain grows, the more energy and nutrients it takes away from other vital organs.
The necessity for such a large brain in evolutionary terms was thrown in doubt by Professor John Lorber’s study detailing individuals who somehow managed to function normally with an IQ over a hundred with nothing more than a sliver of brain tissue. One boy had an IQ of 126 and a first class honours degree in mathematics, despite the fact he had “virtually no brain”. A CAT scan showed the boy’s skull was lined with a thin layer of brain cells to a millimeter in thickness. The rest of his skull was filled with cerebrospinal fluid. The young man continued a normal life with virtually no brain.
From over 600 scans of people with hydrocephalus Lorber documented that just under 10% had 95% of the cranial cavity filled with cerebrospinal fluid. Half of this group were profoundly retarded. The remaining half had IQs greater than 100. Sceptics have claimed that it was an error of interpretation of the scans themselves. Lorber himself admits that reading a CAT scan can be tricky. He also has said that he would not make such a claim without evidence. In answer to attacks that he has not precisely measured the amount of brain tissue missing, he added, “I can’t say whether the mathematics student has a brain weighing 50 grams or 150 grams, but it is clear that it is nowhere near the normal 1.5 kilograms.”
Okay so that’s for Mathematics students, no need to worry Creative Writers… our brains are fine.

Yey!!! We one!!!
Inspired by the rings involved in this year’s Olympics (the Olympic symbol, the 08’s.?.), I decided I should make a post - however mindless it may be.
The next 08/08/08 will happen a century from now and that obviously says a lot. If the Mayans were right and the alien invasion happens in 2012, this will be the last Olympics. Depends on the month we are scheduled for harvesting.
Besides, one world one dream is a pretty good tagline. It rules out the fact that 1 is a very lonely number. It defies the mathematical rule that 1+1 is 2. And it definitely pushes us into dreaming that an Olympic victory is the One Goal. Forget politics. Forget nuclear weapons. Forget global warming. Forget China and Tibet. Forget the fumes in China. WE ARE ONE WORLD PEOPLE! America is not Bush. Philippines is not Gloria. There are no developing countries. Rich nations don’t always get the gold. We have really great athletes and if one of them brings home the gold, that person will be our symbol of hope. Onyok, for instance, won silver and look at him now. He is a nationally acclaimed comedian… or is he?
But does it matter? This is one goal one dream. There’s no room for pessimism. Sports is the only way nations are united. And it is called COMPETITION not WAR. There is hope for world peace. Miss Universe anyone?

Go figure.
Must be Elvis Costello in the background.
Just one of those nights.
I can’t wait for X Files. One of the sad realities in the part of the galaxy where I’m in - late movie openings.
